Who is Jonathan Seabra?

Jonathan is a lifelong resident of the East Ward.

Jonathan is the proud son of Portuguese immigrants, who migrated here in the 1960s. He watched as his family took their small grocery store and turned it a successful pillar of the community.

In his childhood, he played on the streets of the East Ward and attended classes at Wilson Avenue School. He then received his diploma from Technology High School in Newark, after which he received his bachelor’s degree in political science from New Jersey’s own Farleigh Dickinson University. He also obtained a master in public administration from City University in New York City.

Jonathan’s first professional job was at Newark’s City Hall, where he devoted his energies to dealing with issues of public safety and justice. Afterwards, he was honored with the opportunity to serve in Barack Obama’s White House as an intern in the Department of Commerce. In the last few years, he has been a Client Onboarding Analyst for the storied bank, JP Morgan Chase, and for Mitsubishi Union Financial Group.

Jonathan still puts in his time at his family grocery store, where you can find him stocking shelves and managing the cash register. He then goes home to his apartment on Main Street, where his favorite dog waits for him.

But, Why Run for Council?

Jonathan loves the East Ward, but he sees all the challenges it faces—safety, education, development—and knows we can do better to address them. That is why he is running again for council. He has both the private sector and public sector work experience and the knowledge of the neighborhood to craft solutions on Day One. He is raring to fight for the residents of this part of the city and won’t let the same old excuses prevent the changes this ward so richly deserves.
